Learn to identify confined spaces, control their hazards, test the air, work under an entry permit and plan a rescue that does not create more victims.
Tanks, vessels, sewers, wet wells, pits and ship tanks look harmless, yet every year they kill hundreds of workers, mostly through air that cannot be seen or smelled, and about six in ten of the victims are people who went in to rescue a colleague. This self-study course gives you the knowledge to enter, supervise or support confined space work safely. It follows OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146 and 1926 Subpart AA, the UK Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 and their Approved Code of Practice, and the IOGP Life-Saving Rules used across the oil and gas industry, and it points out where oil companies apply stricter limits.
Across eight lessons you will follow a maintenance contractor in Zubair, Basra, as it cleans crude oil tanks and repairs sewage wet wells. You will learn how to identify and classify confined spaces, keep a register and sign them; the hazards inside, including oxygen deficiency and enrichment, flammable gas and the LEL, H₂S, CO and other toxic gases, gas layering, engulfment, heat and machinery; how to plan an entry by avoiding it where possible, writing a risk assessment, positively isolating every line, cleaning, purging and ventilating; how to test the air in the right order and at every level and when to monitor continuously; the entry permit and the duties of the entrant, attendant, supervisor and gas tester; PPE, breathing apparatus, harnesses, tripods and winches; and how to plan, equip and practise a rescue from outside. The course includes 51 diagrams and charts, narrated videos, a real-life style near-miss case study, knowledge checks in every lesson, downloadable templates and a 25-question final exam.
Workers who enter confined spaces, attendants (standby persons), entry supervisors, HSE officers and supervisors, permit issuers and maintenance staff in oil and gas, refineries, water and sewage, ports, shipping, construction and industry. No previous training is required; gas testers should also take the Authorized Gas Tester course.
