What sustainable development means
Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
This definition comes from the United Nations' Brundtland Report of 1987, and it is still the most widely used. It asks a simple question of every decision: can we keep doing this, year after year, without running out of what we depend on or harming the people around us?
For a company, a city or a family, unsustainable patterns eventually become expensive: wells and rivers run low, energy bills climb, waste piles up, communities lose trust, and customers move away. Sustainable choices protect the future and, very often, save money today.
Meet Rusul
In this course you will follow Eng. Rusul, 31, newly appointed sustainability and quality coordinator at Al-Sadeer Dairy and Juice Company in Diwaniyah. The company employs 240 people and sells milk, yoghurt and juices across the middle Euphrates region.
The general manager, Mr Hashim, created her role after a difficult year:
- The local environment directorate warned the company about wastewater discharged into a nearby canal.
- Long power cuts meant running diesel generators for many hours a day; fuel costs rose sharply.
- In summer, water from the river supply was restricted for several weeks.
- A large supermarket chain asked all suppliers to report on packaging and waste.
- Neighbours complained about generator smoke and noise.
"I don't want a public-relations programme," Mr Hashim told her. "I want us to use less, waste less, and be a company the city is proud of. And it has to make business sense."
Al-Sadeer Dairy and Juice Company and all people and figures in this course are fictional examples.
Three pillars

The pillars are connected. A factory that pollutes a canal (environment) damages farmers' crops (society) and risks fines and closure (economy). A factory that saves water lowers its costs, protects supply for the community and strengthens its licence to operate.
The "triple bottom line"
Some organisations measure success on three lines instead of one: people, planet and profit. A good year is one where all three improve, not one where profit rises at the expense of the other two.

The Sustainable Development Goals

The 17 goals give governments, businesses and communities a shared language. A company does not need to work on all of them; it should focus on the goals most connected to its activities.
Rusul identified the goals most relevant to Al-Sadeer:
| Goal | Why it matters to a dairy and juice company |
|---|---|
| 6 Clean water | Heavy water use; wastewater discharge |
| 7 Clean energy | High electricity and diesel use; solar potential |
| 8 Decent work | 240 employees; many local farmers supply milk |
| 12 Responsible consumption | Packaging, food waste, efficient use of materials |
| 13 Climate action | Emissions from generators, refrigeration and trucks |

Why it matters to business

In Iraq and much of the region, sustainability is closely linked to everyday business risks: water scarcity in the Tigris and Euphrates basin, extreme summer heat, unreliable grid power, dust storms and rising fuel costs. Companies that use resources efficiently are more resilient when these pressures hit.

Exercise: a sustainability snapshot
Take a quick look at your own workplace through the three pillars.
- Environment: list the three biggest ways your workplace uses resources or creates waste (energy, water, materials, fuel).
- Society: who is affected by your organisation's activities, inside and outside?
- Economy: which resource costs have risen most in the last two years?
- Choose two Sustainable Development Goals most connected to your work, and say why.
- Write one sustainability risk your organisation faces, such as water or power shortages.
Which statement best describes sustainable development?
This is the widely used definition from the 1987 Brundtland Report.
A factory saves water. Which pillars can benefit?
Less water use protects the resource, leaves more for the community and lowers costs.
