What facility security means
Facility security means protecting the people, assets, information and operations of a site so that work can continue safely. It is not only the job of the guards at the gate: everyone who works on the site plays a part.
In this course you will follow Haider, the new security manager at Al-Mirbad Logistics Hub, a warehouse and container yard near Khor Al-Zubair in Basra. The hub employs 380 people, receives about 160 trucks a day and stores goods for oil companies, retailers and government buyers. In the year before Haider arrived, it recorded 133 security incidents, and losses from theft were rising.

Types of facility
Some facilities are so important that their loss would affect a whole city or the national economy: power stations, water plants, oil fields, ports. These are often called vital or critical facilities and need the highest level of protection, usually in coordination with the authorities.
أنواع المنشآت
بعض المنشآت بالغة الأهمية بحيث يؤثر فقدانها في مدينة كاملة أو في الاقتصاد الوطني، مثل محطات الكهرباء ومحطات المياه وحقول النفط والموانئ. وتُسمى غالباً المنشآت الحيوية أو الحرجة، وتحتاج إلى أعلى مستوى من الحماية، وعادة بالتنسيق مع الجهات الرسمية.
What threatens a facility
Security, safety and emergency planning work together. A guard on patrol may find an intruder, but also a leaking fuel tank or a blocked fire exit. Good security staff report all of them.

يعمل الأمن والسلامة والتخطيط للطوارئ معاً. فقد يجد الحارس في دوريته متسللاً، وقد يجد أيضاً خزان وقود يرشح أو مخرج طوارئ مسدوداً. وفرد الأمن الجيد يبلّغ عنها جميعاً.
Outside and inside
At Al-Mirbad, Haider found that most store thefts happened without any sign of forced entry. Goods were leaving through the main gate on trucks whose loads did not match their paperwork. The weakness was not the fence; it was the exit check.

وجد حيدر في مركز المربد أن معظم سرقات المخازن حدثت دون أي أثر لاقتحام. فقد كانت البضائع تخرج من البوابة الرئيسية على شاحنات لا تطابق حمولاتها أوراقها. فلم تكن الثغرة في السياج، بل في فحص الخروج.
Learning from the incident record
Three types of incident made up three quarters of the hub's problems. Haider's first decision was to focus the security team's time and budget on these, instead of spreading effort evenly across everything.
