Why communication skills matter
Most problems at work are not caused by a lack of knowledge, but by messages that were unclear, misunderstood, sent too late or never sent at all. Communication is a skill, and like any skill it can be learned and improved.
In this course you will follow Huda, an engineer who has just been promoted to lead the network operations team at Babil Telecom in Baghdad: 14 engineers working three shifts, keeping the mobile network running day and night. In her first month she finds three problems: important information gets lost between shifts, the sales department complains that nobody tells them about outages, and team meetings are quiet while complaints are loud in the corridor.
What is communication?
Communication is the exchange of facts, ideas, opinions and feelings between people, so that they reach a shared understanding. The key word is shared: a message has not been communicated until the receiver understands what the sender meant.

One-way and two-way communication
Early models saw communication as a straight line: a speaker sends a message to a listener. One question-based version asks: who says what, through which channel, to whom, with what effect? One-way communication is fast, but the sender never knows whether the message was understood.
Later models added feedback and context. The receiver responds, the sender adjusts, and both are affected by their relationship and situation. Two-way communication takes longer but produces far fewer mistakes.
Shift handovers were one-way: the night engineer left a short note and went home. The day team could not ask questions. Huda's first idea was simple: a 10-minute face-to-face handover where the incoming engineer must repeat back the open issues.
Types of communication

Communication also differs by language: verbal (spoken and written words) and non-verbal (gestures, expressions, actions and even objects, such as how an office is arranged).

Verbal and non-verbal

You may have heard that "93% of communication is non-verbal". That figure comes from narrow experiments about how people express feelings, and is often misused. In a technical handover, the words matter a great deal. What is true is that when words and body language disagree, people tend to believe the body language.

Exercise: your communication map
- List the people you communicate with most at work, and the channel you usually use with each.
- Recall a recent misunderstanding. Where in the process did it break down: sender, message, channel, receiver, feedback or noise?
- Which of your regular messages are one-way? Where would two-way communication prevent mistakes?
- Name one source of "noise" in your workplace and one way to reduce it.
When has communication actually succeeded?
Communication is about shared understanding, which only feedback can confirm.
In the communication process, what is "noise"?
Noise can be physical, psychological or linguistic.
