Trench collapses, dropped loads and hot work fires kill workers on pipeline, utility and plant sites every year. This self-study course is the second part of ISHTAR's OSHA Construction Safety programme. It explains what the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires for excavations (29 CFR 1926 Subpart P), slings and rigging (1910.184 and 1926.251) and welding, cutting and brazing (1910.251 to 1910.255 and 1926 Subpart J), together with NFPA 51B and current industry practice, and shows how to apply them on site.

Across eight lessons you will follow a pipeline contractor in Basra as it lays a water main beside a busy road, lifts a pump skid with a mobile crane and welds the final tie-ins. You will plan a dig and find buried services, classify soil as stable rock or Type A, B or C, and calculate safe slopes and benches; choose and use timber or hydraulic shoring and trench boxes; and control access, spoil, plant, water, gas and daily inspections. You will compare sling types, read tags, apply hitch factors and calculate the tension in each leg from the sling angle; inspect chain, wire rope and synthetic slings and hardware; and plan a lift. Finally you will set up oxy-fuel and arc welding safely, store cylinders, choose filter shades, and manage the 11-metre hot work zone, the fire watch, fumes and PPE. The course includes 48 diagrams and charts, three narrated videos, downloadable checklists and a calculator, knowledge checks in every lesson and a 25-question final exam.
