Most workplace fires start small, and what people do in the first few minutes decides whether they stay small. This self-study course trains employees, supervisors and appointed fire and emergency wardens to prevent fires, to act correctly when one starts, and to lead everyone out safely. It follows good international practice (NFPA 10, the European EN 2 and EN 3 standards, OSHA emergency action plan rules) and the Iraqi context, including the Civil Defence Law No. 44 of 2013 and lessons from recent fires in Iraq.
Across eight lessons you will follow Murtadha, the safety officer at a plastics factory in Najaf, as he builds a fire safety programme after an overloaded extension lead catches fire in the warehouse. You will learn how fire starts, grows and spreads, and why smoke is the main killer; fire classes in the US and European systems and which agent fits each; and how to prevent fires through housekeeping, electrical safety, generators, LPG, flammable liquids and hot-work control. You will see how detectors, alarms, sprinklers, fire doors, exits and signs protect people, and how they are tested. You will learn to read an extinguisher label, decide whether to fight or leave, use the PASS method and a fire blanket, and check extinguishers every month. Finally you will learn what an emergency plan contains, the duties of the emergency team and floor wardens, escape routes and assembly points, roll call, helping people with disabilities, meeting Civil Defence, running and evaluating drills, and responding to gas leaks, spills and other emergencies. The course includes 47 diagrams and charts, three narrated videos, downloadable templates and a 25-question final exam.
