Some decisions commit large sums of money, affect many people or are hard to reverse. This self-study course gives you a clear eight-step process for such decisions, together with practical analytical tools, so that you can choose well, explain your choice and make sure it delivers results.
Across six lessons you will follow a realistic case study: the plant manager of a plastic pipe factory in Ramadi, where production lines stop every summer afternoon, scrap piles up and the diesel bill soars. Instead of repeating last year's quick fixes, he measures the problem, finds its real cause, generates five alternatives with his team, screens and scores them, compares payback and expected values, and recommends a solar and battery hybrid system with night shifts as an interim measure. He then plans, communicates, monitors and reviews the decision. One year later, lost hours fall from 9 to under 2 a week and diesel use drops by almost two thirds. You will learn the eight steps of decision making, routine and non-routine decisions, involving the right people, defining problems with data, "is / is not" analysis, problem statements, information-gathering plans and reliable sources, generating alternatives, must-have screening, analysing options, the weighted decision matrix, testing results, cost-benefit and payback, decision trees and expected value, decision records, implementation plans and interim measures, communicating decisions, risk planning, monitoring with warning levels, corrective action and reviewing results. Each lesson includes charts and diagrams, worked examples and short questions that check your understanding, and the course ends with a 20-question final exam.
