What influence really is
Influence is the ability to change what people think, feel or do, without forcing them. It is how good ideas become reality in organisations.
Most of us need other people's cooperation every day: colleagues in other departments, senior managers, clients, suppliers. We rarely have authority over them. Our results depend on whether they want to help.
Influence is not a gift that some people are born with. It rests on a few things anyone can build: credibility, understanding others, a clear message, confident presence, and allies.
Push and pull
There are two broad ways to get things done through people.

Push has its place, for example in an emergency or a safety rule. But when you need people's ideas, energy and long-term commitment, pull works far better, and it is the only option when you have no authority at all.

Where influence comes from

People who rely only on their position lose influence the moment they leave the room. People who build expertise, information, relationships, character and vision are listened to whatever their title.

Meet Nadia
In this course you will follow Nadia, 29, quality coordinator at the Nakheel Medical Centre, a private outpatient centre in Basra with 14 clinics.
Patients wait an average of 35 minutes just to check in at reception, and waiting is the top complaint in every survey. Nadia believes a digital check-in system, with appointment slots and SMS queue numbers, would fix it.
But Nadia has no authority. She needs support from people who outrank her or do not report to her:
| Person | Role | First reaction |
|---|---|---|
| Dr Kareem | Medical director | "Another system for doctors to learn? No." |
| Mr Raad | Finance director | "How much will it cost?" |
| Ms Suad | Head nurse | "My nurses already handle the queues." |
| Hussein | IT officer | "Our network can't cope." |
Nakheel Medical Centre and all people in this course are fictional examples.
The path of influence
Nadia's journey follows five steps, one per lesson. Each step builds on the one before.
| Lesson | Step | The key question |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Build credibility | Why should they listen to me? |
| 3 | Understand others | What do they care about and fear? |
| 4 | Craft the message | How do I make the case clear and compelling? |
| 5 | Presence, emotion and ethics | How do I come across, and am I being fair? |
| 6 | Build support and stay consistent | How do I turn individual yeses into lasting change? |
Exercise: your influence profile
- Think of a change you want to make at work that needs other people's support.
- Rate yourself from 1 to 5 on each of the six sources: position, expertise, information, relationships, character, vision.
- Which source is your strongest? How can you use it more for this change?
- Which source is weakest? Write one action to build it in the next month.
- List the three people whose support you need most. Keep this list for lesson 3.
Which source of influence comes only with a job title?
Position is formal authority from your role. The other sources can be built by anyone, whatever their title.
Why does "pull" usually produce better long-term results than "push"?
When people agree for their own reasons, they put in effort and ideas, and the change lasts.
