Why first aid matters at work
When someone collapses, bleeds heavily or stops breathing, the first few minutes decide the outcome. An ambulance in Basra can take 15 to 30 minutes to reach an oilfield or port. The person who helps in those minutes is usually a colleague.

Meet Al-Qurna Oilfield Services
Throughout this course you will follow Ali, a maintenance technician at Al-Qurna Oilfield Services, a company of 140 staff that runs pump stations and workshops north of Basra. After a worker fainted from heat last summer and nobody knew what to do, the HSE coordinator, Ms. Huda, asked Ali and five colleagues to become the site's first aiders.
Each lesson follows one part of Ali's training and his first months as a first aider.

The chain of help
No single action saves a life on its own. Survival depends on all the links happening quickly and in order. A first aider's job is to start the chain and keep it moving until paramedics arrive.
سلسلة المساعدة
لا ينقذ إجراء واحد حياة بمفرده، فالنجاة تعتمد على حدوث كل الحلقات بسرعة وبالترتيب. ومهمة المسعف الأولي أن يبدأ السلسلة ويُبقيها مستمرة حتى وصول المسعفين.
Every minute counts
When the heart stops, the brain starts to be damaged within 4 to 6 minutes. Without CPR, the chance of survival falls by about 7 to 10 percent with each minute. Chest compressions keep some blood flowing to the brain and slow that fall, buying time until a defibrillator arrives.
كل دقيقة مهمة
حين يتوقف القلب يبدأ تلف الدماغ خلال 4 إلى 6 دقائق. ودون إنعاش تنخفض فرصة النجاة بنحو 7 إلى 10 بالمئة كل دقيقة. أما الضغطات الصدرية فتُبقي بعض الدم متدفقاً إلى الدماغ وتبطئ هذا الانخفاض، فتكسب وقتاً حتى يصل جهاز الصدمات.
The first aider's role
First aid is the help you give before medical care arrives. You are not expected to diagnose or to act like a doctor. You are expected to keep yourself safe, keep the person alive, stop things getting worse and get help quickly.
دور المسعف الأولي
الإسعاف الأولي هو المساعدة التي تقدمها قبل وصول الرعاية الطبية. ولا يُنتظر منك أن تشخّص أو تتصرف كطبيب، بل أن تحافظ على سلامتك وتُبقي المصاب حياً وتمنع تدهور حالته وتطلب المساعدة بسرعة.
How many first aiders does a site need?
Ms. Huda started with a first aid needs assessment: the hazards on site, the number of people on each shift, remote locations, and how long an ambulance takes. Al-Qurna is a higher-hazard workplace with 140 staff on two shifts, so she planned at least three trained first aiders per shift, not three for the whole company.

بدأت السيدة هدى بتقييم احتياجات الإسعاف الأولي: مخاطر الموقع، وعدد الأشخاص في كل مناوبة، والمواقع النائية، والوقت الذي تستغرقه سيارة الإسعاف. شركة القرنة مكان عمل عالي الخطورة فيه 140 موظفاً على مناوبتين، لذا خططت لثلاثة مسعفين مدربين على الأقل في كل مناوبة، لا ثلاثة للشركة كلها.
Safe and respectful first aid
If the person is awake, say who you are and ask: "I am a first aider. Can I help you?" If they refuse, stay nearby and call for help. If they are unresponsive, you may help: their consent is assumed.
إسعاف أولي آمن ومحترم
إذا كان المصاب واعياً فعرّف بنفسك واسأله: «أنا مسعف أولي، هل يمكنني مساعدتك؟» وإذا رفض فابقَ قريباً واطلب المساعدة. أما إذا كان فاقد الاستجابة فيمكنك مساعدته، إذ تُعدّ موافقته مفترضة.
