Why gas testing saves lives
You cannot see, smell or taste most dangerous gases. A tank that looks empty can hold enough hydrogen sulphide to kill in one breath, or enough gas vapour to explode when a welder strikes an arc.

An Authorized Gas Tester (AGT) is the person a site trusts to measure the air before and during dangerous work, and to say "stop" when it is not safe.

Meet Sindibad Gas Services
Throughout this course you will follow Adnan, an instrument technician at Sindibad Gas Services, a company that runs and maintains gas compression stations near Basra. His HSE lead, Eng. Wafaa, has nominated him to become one of the station's Authorized Gas Testers.
- Eng. Saif is the area authority who issues permits at compressor station 4.
- Jabbar is the welding foreman whose crew needs hot work permits most weeks.
- Next month, vessel V-401 (a scrubber) will be opened, cleaned and entered for inspection.

What an AGT does
The AGT does not decide alone whether a job goes ahead. The area authority issues the permit. But no permit that needs a gas test can be issued without the AGT's signed results.

Gas testing inside the permit to work
The gas test comes after isolation, draining, purging and venting. Testing before the equipment is made safe only tells you that it is still full of gas.

Only a measured, recorded test shows that the air is safe. Smell is unreliable and fixed detectors must never be disabled without authorisation.

Rules and standards behind gas testing
- Iraq: the Labour Law (No. 37 of 2015) gives employers a general duty to protect workers' health and safety. Oil and gas operators and their contractors add detailed permit and gas testing procedures.
- International references used across the industry: US OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146 (permit-required confined spaces), UK HSE Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 and COSHH 2002, UK workplace exposure limits (EH40), and NIOSH guidance.
- Your site procedure sets the actual limits, test intervals and forms. Where it is stricter than a general rule, it applies.

A change in conditions, such as a new line being opened, needs a new test. A gas test is only a snapshot.
Who issues the permit to work?
The AGT measures and records. The area authority issues the permit, and cannot do so without the gas test where one is required.
